SOLs Covered: SOL 6.6 (MSMI.8) Multiplying & Dividing Fractions
New Math Dictionary Sections: None
Upcoming Assessments: Multiplying/Dividing Fractions Redo on Mon. 10/26/09, Coordinate Plane & Coordinate Geometry (TBA)
The week started with our Basic Fraction Concepts Quiz redo. We continued our work on the basics of multiplying and dividing with fractions and began working with them in word problems. Students were told to continue refering to previous math dictionary sections for review to aid in this process. Our "mini-operations poster" from the Estimation section can be used to help determine whether a problem is asking us to multiply or divide. Our Algebraic Concepts section can help with the set up of each problem. Our Decimals & Fractions section can help with the procedure for turning mixed and whole numbers into improper fractions to work the problem and then to simplify for the answers. The entire Multiplying & Dividing Fractions section tells the basic steps needed to correctly work the problems. Students should devote time every week (and over the weekends!) just for reviewing all of their math dictionary. When the quiz was given for this section, many students again failed to show work, which again resulted in poor results, so a redo will be given for this section as well on Monday. The week ended with the 3rd WWU Quiz.
