Weekly Class Summary: Dec. 7-11

We began the week with a brief review of everything we have already done with fractions this year. Emphasis was given to converting fractions to equivalent forms, converting from mixed/whole numbers to improper fractions, and simplifying fractions. These concepts led into our work on adding and subtracting fractions. Area models, including a Skittles® activity, were used for a visual representation of adding and subtracting "pieces from other pieces" and how it relates to "regular" adding and subtracting where only whole numbers are used. Students then worked on adding and subtracting fractions with both like and unlike denominators using the four basic steps. Extra focus was given to subtraction problems where "borrowing" is needed and an extra step is needed. These concepts will be continued next week with the inclusion of mixed and whole numbers along with word problems. The week was wrapped up with the 5th Spiral Review WWU Quiz.
