New Math Dictionary Sections: None
Upcoming Assessments: Probability (TBA)

We began the week by continuing our unit on ratios, rates, and proportions. In addition to solving basic computation problems that involved all three, we discussed how each can be used in the real world, specifically how to use them to help budget your shopping expenses. Students are still encouraged to accompany parents/guardians on shopping trips if possible so that they can observe how unit rates in particular are used to help make cost-effective shopping decisions. Any student that brings in a parent/guardian note stating that they did so can receive Stingray Points for the activity.

The second half of the week revolved around our work with decimals, fractions, and percents. While we have done quite a bit of work with decimals and fractions this year, percents were introduced for the first time. The notes for this unit were already given in
Sect. 14. While students have been shown how this unit connects to the previous in that percents can involve the use of proportions, most have taken to the "2 Step" method that has an accompanying theme song of "2 Step" by UNK. Since students are already familar with converting fractions to decimals and vice versa, they can easily convert decimals to percents by moving the decimal "2 steps to the left" and percents to decimals by moving the decimal "2 steps to the right."

The quiz on both units that was originally scheduled for Thursday was switched with the regular WWU Quiz (7th) so that we could have an extra day to work with percents.
