Notes on Percent of Change

Percent of Change



Percent of Change can be a difficult concept to understand, but it can be very easy to figure out: the old value subtracted from the new value, then divided by the old value, times 100. If the final number is positive, the percent of change was an increase. However, if the final number is negative, it was a decrease.

The picture below should explain the "how" a little better. Understanding what we use percent of change for is where some people start to get confused. It's use lies in studying and understanding changes in a value over time.
