The x axis is the horizontal and the y is the vertical.
This post is for horizontal and vertical lines, not the axes....a "y=" line would make a horizontal line with 0 slope and a "x=" line would be a vertical line with an undefined slope. I taught a year of 8th grade Algebra I in addition to all my years as a 6th grade pre-algebra teacher.

That is y = a number or x = a number.
