We wrapped up our work on Algebraic Concepts the first half of the week. Students continued learning how to solve equations, translate from English to "Mathish" and vice-versa, and the basic vocabulary of Algebra. We did work with our "Kindergarten Algebra," turning and solving algebraic equations into picture problems using shapes, objects, and algebra tiles. There was a quiz on Wednesday, which did not turn out well for many of the students. Since I feel the wording lead to some confusion, an alternative version is being assigned to be completed as a take-home quiz over the weekend (due Monday, October 12). We have started working with decimals and fractions, which will pop up frequently throughout the year. At this point, much of the work is review from last year (comparing and ordering both; simplifying fractions and changing mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice versa). We will continue to build on that knowledge and begin multiplying and dividing, both in and out of word problems, next week.
