SOLs Covered: SOL 6.6 Addition and Subtraction of Fractions; SOL 6.9 U.S. Customary Units
Math Dictionary Sections: (13) Adding & Subtracting Fractions; (14) U.S. Customary System
Upcoming Assessments: U.S. Customary Quiz (Wed. 1/6/11)
While the week was shortened due to snow closings, students were able to complete the unit on quiz on adding and subtracting fractions. Some students still have difficulty with remembering and following the "Fantastic Four" steps I gave them for solving any problem involving addition or subtraction of fractions, part of some of the difficulties stem from some of their continued difficulty with basic multiplication. We continue to practice weekly on our times table, but students are encouraged to practice on their own. I have added many websites were they can practice (and play!) to increase their skills and the county has just purchased the licenses for a new game system for each of our students. DimensionM (part of the DimensionU game system) offers remediation on old concepts and practice for new concepts. Students were given their usernames and passwords prior to the snow days and winter break and have been encouraged to play at home.
