Math Dictionary Sections: (16) Scientific Notation
Upcoming Assessments: 2MP Benchmark (Fri. 2/11/11); Metric Quiz (TBA)
We started of the new marking period with a fairly easy unit, scientific notation. Students took to the topic quickly and were able to convert numbers from standard form to scientific form both "manually" (by moving the decimal) and with the help of the calculator. We discussed when they can expect to use scientific notation in their future classes and what fields of work would use this form of writing and working with numbers. We also viewed a PowerPoint that covered various examples, including the calculation of distiance in space using light years. The students worked with VersaTiles for one of their worksheets, which was then added to the Math Dictionary for their examples. The quiz for this unit was taken on Friday.
This week also allowed us to continue with our online gaming world of DimenionU, which we used to help study and practice for the upcoming benchmark test. Students have really gotten into the system and seem to love every minute of our lab time. I will continue to try and find lab time throughout the year, but students are encouraged to play at home and the public libraries. Students should also ask their parents to register them for the U Games, which are run by the creators Tabula Digita. Every two weeks marks the start of a new round where the top players earn prizes and can qualify for the finals, which are held in New York in May 2011 and come with a top prize of a $50,000 college scholarship and $1,000 cash. Students can only qualify and win prizes if they register and play regularly within the middle school level. For students having trouble downloading the program at home, I will have CDs with the Windows version that can be checked out starting next week.
