Weekly Class Summary: Dec. 12-16

SOLs Covered: 6.10 Circles
Math Dictionary Sections: (9) Circles
Upcoming Assessments: Circles (complete on Mon. 1/2); WWU Quiz 6 (Fri. 1/6)

The sole focus of this week's lessons was the circle. We did a very thorough review each day of each homework assignment under the document camera, using highlighters to help students remember what spots to "plug in" the given numbers. We also watched an episode of Cyberchase© ("Borg of the Ring" Ep. #302) that gave us one of our daily warm up questions, which later connects to the approach need to solve one of our quiz question scenarios. The quiz was started in all classes on Friday but due to a lengthy review beforehand (as well as the passing out of holiday treats and an unexpected fire-drill), most students while be finishing the quiz upon the return. While this is most definitely not ideal, students should be okay with the time in between since this is an open-notes quiz, meaning they can use their Math Dictionaries and review worksheets to guide them through their work.

A few students who did finish work up early were able to help with our holiday door decorations, which went with this week's unit. Prior to leaving for break, students were also given several extra activities that can be finished over break; these are not for grades nor are they required, but students can receive Stingray points for each one completed and returned (10 each). Students were also told that they could start watching Cyberchase (which airs on PBS) at home on their own and write a summary (which must include the math worked within the episode) to receive 5 Stingrays per episode. The Cyberchase "extras" can be earned throughout the year, but the holiday ones must be turned in by the end of the week we return to school.

Finally, I would like for each student to start the Year 2012 with a BANG! You can be a big part of this successful start by doing the following:
  • Replenishing supplies: paper, pencils, colored pencils, scissors, glue.
  • Cleaning out notebooks/binders: all papers from September and October can be left at home, preferably in a separate folder to help with organization.
  • Checking Edline: look at the footnotes and make-up any missing assignments and/or completing JLabs in lieu of lost assignments; missing work will be given NO CREDIT!
  • Doing extra credit: completing extra JLabs for E.C. and extra Stingray assignments for points, which can then be traded in for a class reward.
  • Have discussions about the importance of doing their best, participating in class, and having a positive attitude.

Enjoy your time with family and friends and have a safe and happy holiday!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
