It's been a crazy month for us here in Central VA! There was no WCS posting last week (only a quick email and Edmodo messages to the kids) since school was closed to students the entire week and teachers only went in that Friday for a work day. This week, we at least got three days of school in before more snow put us out again Thursday and Friday, so we all tried to pack as much learning into that time as possible. The MSM2 classes got right to work on surface area and volume. They worked with both types of measurement with rectangular prisms in 6th grade, but for 7th we've added in cylinders as well as calculating what changing one attribute on a prism does to the measurements. We'll be continuing this work next week (it was originally planned for two weeks even before the snow days) and the kids will start the week off with a short, open-notes quiz on the basics before we delve deeper into the topic. The 7H class started working with geometric transformations, a topic they've also covered in the past, though it will be "upped" in complexity since they'll have to be able to work with more than one transformation being done on the shapes at once. While students thought it would make it more difficult, they realized if they took it one change at a time, it is just as simple as dealing with only one.

Since the weather forecast gave a pretty good warning on the possible time out, I prepared the kids with work to do on the snow days on Wednesday and posted a reminder to Edmodo. We'll go over the work before each class takes their quiz (as previously mentioned and as the kids were told in class, they'll be allowed to use their notes).

As a final note, if you don't have anything to do this afternoon, head up to the school for the final show at 3 P.M. of this year's play production, The Sound of Music. I took my nieces yesterday and we loved every minute of it. Kudos to all the kids, bit especially to my former and current students. Awesome job, kids!
