Notes on Adding & Subtracting Fractions

To add or subtract fractions:

1. Turn all mixed and/or whole numbers into improper fractions.
2. Find equivalent fractions with a common denominator.
3. Add/Subtract the numerator.
   *Denominator stays the same.
4. Reduce to simplest form.

*Note that some steps are not always needed for every problem.
*To turn a whole number into an improper fraction, put it over 1.
*Remember: LCD is the LCM of the denominators.
